Derrick “Snap” Bradford is a very talented and dedicated Singer/Songwriter. Derrick was born into music as both his mother, Carolyn Hopkins and his father, Eddie C. Bradford were both recording artist. Being born into a family filled with singers, songwriters and musicians he grew up learning a variety of genres of music. Although, Derrick grew up singing in the church and at different schools and talent shows, he gravitated more towards lyrics and wordplay and would later begin to chase his dream of being a singer/songwriter. As a teenager , Derrick would begin to cultivate his gift by purchasing instrumentals to popular songs and recreating his own songs using two radios, one to play the instrumental and the other to record over any cassette tape he could find. Meanwhile, he would sharpen his singing skill by singing with his mother and participating in most practices and rehearsals that his mother attended. This would later lead to his first trio vocal group created by his mother, which included his two younger sisters Delandria and Candice Hopkins, who later grew up to be a recording artist of her own. This would be the first of many groups. Derrick would later join and create multiple groups in order to further pursue his dreams . Singing on the streets of Old Town Pasadena, Hollywood Blvd, Venice Beach and any open mic he could find, he landed a gig opening for Evelyn “Champagne” King and Keith Sweat. That would be the needed motivation that would land Derrick back in school, where he would attend Pasadena City College in which he took vocal and songwriting classes. Using the skill and connections he received in college Derrick “Snap” Bradford would later join a movement entitled “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” which included an ensemble of singers, rappers, dancers, producers, poets, engineers, actors and songwriters. It was there where Derrick would decide to “step out of the box” and decided to give rap a try figuring he could expand his vocabulary for songwriting. Overtime, Derrick would continue to study musical influences such as Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Musiq Soulchild , Eric Roberson Bilal and Jill Scott. All the while continuing to sing background and working with both polished and up and coming artists. Those artist would include Kirk Whalum, Ron Brown, Charlie Burrell, Angie Fisher, Leon Timbo, Lowell Pye(Men of Standard), Kevin Lavar, Charles Jones, Carolyn Hopkins, Dana Hill, Jon Jon Harreld(Troop), Paco Swartz, Romaine Jones, Yoshino Ushijima and Jonathan Decuir. Recently, Derrick has written multiple songs for Jon Jon Harreld’s(Troop) upcoming Solo Album, working on numerous projects with Michael Clark(Freefall) as well as many other up and coming talents. Currently, Derrick is still pursuing his music career and continuing to inspire those around him by becoming living proof that anything is possible and your dreams are definitely attainable. Thank you for taking the time to read the journey of Derrick “Snap” Bradford and there will be more to come.
